The course provides an introduction to science as a way of thinking and scientific research as a process of inquiry. The course introduces the nature of educational research and the steps in the process of research (research problem, variables and hypotheses, ethics and research, review of the literature, sampling, instrumentation, validity and reliability, internal validity, data collection), followed by basic of statistical data analysis (organizing data, descriptive statistics, statistical inference, inferential statistics) and data processing. The course covers the main qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
These are very specific “objectives” for the course and are, in effect, substantive matters of the course. These are:
• To understand social science frameworks for scientific social inquiry.
• To understand the various methods for conducting empirical research.
• To examine trends and patterns in the use of various research methods.
• To analyze and evaluate important research terms, concepts, and techniques.
• Develop competence to design, execute and report research.
• Be able to apply various statistics to analyze data.
• Be able to apply research findings in practice.
• Be able to understand the role of qualitative and quantitative research in generating knowledge.

    • • Discuss the philosophical underpinnings of educational research and describe the applications of the scientific method
    • • Explain the difference between quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research paradigms
    • • Explain the difference between various research methods used in educational research
    • • Select a research topic, state a research objective and research question and propose a method of study to answer the question.
    • • Conduct a review of relevant literature that synthesizes the knowledge from several research studies around the central idea or research question including identifying the existing gaps in the literature.
    • • Describe the measurement and data collection procedures including instrumentation and methods for determining reliability and validity. Determine the correct data collection techniques to answer a research question.
    • • Describe the types of quantitative and qualitative validity and methods for establishing them.
