|Modern English Practice aims to undertake a systematic survey of the structure of Contemporary English and provide a general overview of all the aspects of Contemporary English Grammar through broad text analysis. It covers grammatical categories of verbs, providing an in-depth analysis of all the tenses, active and passive voice, subjunctive mood and real, hypothetical and counterfactual conditional clauses, as well as the subject-verb agreement. Apart from verbs, all the other syntactic categories are analyzed, such as nouns (different kinds of nouns, grammatical categories of nouns: number, gender and case), determiners, adjectives and the comparison of adjectives, pronouns and different kinds of pronouns. Thus, it strives to prepare students for grammar and reading tasks of all the standardized tests in English-language assessment.
Course meetings will be lectures, supplemented by tutorials. Lectures, as well as tutorials, are conducted in English. Thus, students must have an excellent command of spoken and written English. Asking questions is highly encouraged, even during lecture delivery and student presentations.

• In tutorials, students put the acquired knowledge into practice and are being prepared for TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, CPE and other standardized tests in English-language assessment.
|Upon completion of this course, students:
• should have gained an advanced knowledge of all areas of English grammar.
• should have improved their reading skills to an advanced level;
• should have acquired sufficient advanced-level vocabulary to comprehend the texts and thus be able to use this vocabulary in writing and speaking assignments.

- Emphasis: preposing (topicalization and left dislocation), cleft and pseudo-cleft constructions, existential constructions, negative inversion etc.
