The course explores foundations for the methodology of scientific research in architecture from the aspect of theoretical assessment and analysis engaging issues of perception and definition of research problem, formulation of research hypothesis, scientific analysis, determination of research outline, definition of research goals, use of literature and scientific sources. The focus of this course is application of traditional, common research methods on the specific field of architecture and urban planning (as a creative disciplines and therefore less scientific). The course is therefore dedicated to interrogation and discussion of three fundamental aspects of architectural research: basic tools and instruments necessary for quality architectural research, the relationship between architectural critique and practice and the issues of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ architecture and related paradigms. Accordingly the course affirms contemporary architectural thought and engagement in raising public awareness regarding the importance and the consequences of architecture in general.

• apply standard investigating methods on a specific, architectonic subject;
• develop a critical framework of personalized architectural research method;
• identify basic architectural elements to be critically evaluated;
• identify methods of inquiry adequate for research in different contexts;
• develop an original and relevant paper hypothesis that will contribute new perspective on a topic of architectural design and urban planning;
• define methodologies and strategies necessary for the research development;
• compile the necessary background material to validate and support the hypothesis;
• increase the ability to understand and validate architectural research;
